What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, following the Day of Arafah when the pilgrims stand at Arafah. It is the Day of Sacrifice, in which Hajj and the offering come together in revival of the Sunnah of Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, whose son was ransomed by a great sacrifice.

The day begins with the Eid prayer followed by the Udhiyah: whoever slaughters before the prayer has offered only ordinary meat, as established in Sahih al-Bukhari (5545). Slaughtering extends until the end of the days of Tashriq (13 Dhul-Hijjah), takbir is prescribed from the morning of Arafah until the end of Tashriq, and the one offering eats from the sacrifice, gives gifts and feeds the poor.

The Hijri date may differ by one day depending on the moon sighting and the official announcement in your country.
