What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, following the complete fast of Ramadan. The day begins with the Eid prayer shortly after sunrise, with takbirs prescribed from sunset on the last night of Ramadan until the prayer. It is named “the festival of breaking the fast” because eating becomes lawful again after a month of fasting.
Fasting on the two Eid days is forbidden, and Zakat al-Fitr — one sa’ of staple food per Muslim (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503) — must be paid before the Eid prayer as a purification for the fasting person and food for the poor. It is recommended to bathe, wear one’s best clothes and let families and children celebrate and exchange greetings.
The Hijri date may differ by one day depending on the moon sighting and the official announcement in your country.
Eid greetings and takbirs
Muslims exchange Eid greetings with comprehensive formulas, the best known being “Taqabbal Allah minna wa minkum salih al-a’mal” (May Allah accept good deeds from us and you), “Eid Mubarak” and “Eid Sa’id”; on Eid al-Adha, “Adha Mubarak” is also said. Greetings are best made with supplication.
The takbirs are prescribed from sunset on the last night of Ramadan until the Eid al-Fitr prayer, recited aloud in mosques and homes in the well-known wording:
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar — la ilaha illa Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar — wa lillah al-hamd
